Chapter 01

A Remarkable Ownership Story

Black Caviar’s ownership began with a group of long-time friends who decided to pool their money and buy a racehorse. They purchased the filly in February 2008 and named her after one of their favourite foods.

She was trained by Peter Moody and ridden in most of her major races by Luke Nolen. From the beginning, her speed and composure marked her out as an exceptional sprinter.

Chapter 02

The Winning Sequence

Black Caviar built an unbeaten record that eventually reached 25 victories from 25 starts. Her sequence included leading sprint races in Australia and established her as the dominant sprinter of her era.

Her nineteenth victory came in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington, where she defeated Hay List and narrowly missed the course record. Hay List was regarded as one of the few horses capable of giving her a serious challenge, but Black Caviar’s acceleration over the final stages proved decisive.

Chapter 03

Royal Ascot

On 23 June 2012, Black Caviar travelled to England for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. She won by the narrowest of margins after Luke Nolen eased her close to the finish.

The result was confirmed after a photo finish. Black Caviar sustained minor muscle injuries during the race, which made the victory even more notable and added to the drama of her international appearance.

Chapter 04

Records and Recognition

Black Caviar’s unbeaten sequence surpassed long-standing Australian records associated with Gloaming and Desert Gold and also exceeded the winning run of the outstanding American mare Zenyatta.

She was widely regarded as the world’s leading sprinter and was repeatedly ranked among the best racehorses in the world. Her ability to win under different conditions and at different racecourses made her record especially impressive.

Chapter 05

Legacy

Black Caviar retired unbeaten after 25 starts. Her career transformed her into a national sporting figure and one of the most recognisable racehorses in Australian history.

Her combination of speed, resilience and consistency ensured that she would be compared with other Australian legends such as Phar Lap and Makybe Diva.
